I opened my eyes this morning and saw the bathroom door was closed and I heard the shower running knowing my husband managed to get up before me – which is rare. The tv in the bedroom was on and the morning show was talking about how a plane hit the NYC icon. As i emerged from that place between awake and asleep, it dawned on me – this is exactly how the day began 18 years ago.
That day changed the world. Changed how we thought about ourselves, our families and each other. It also changed the course of my career and set me on a truly challenging path that has led me to where I am today. The owner of the company I worked with at the time decided to sell her company in the days after this tragic event , knowing the industry was going to take a turn, and offered to sell. I signed the papers on 9/19/01. The rest of that tale is a story for another time.
That day changed so much… but what I remember most is how we as a society, in the US and across the globe, stood together, side by side to protect each other and put those on notice that we would not tolerate the hate or actions that would harm any one of us or our friends and allies.
While we will always remember those who perished that horrible day, let us never forget that feeling of solidarity and that we are ALL one people who share this planet. I sure hope we can get back to that feeling again that we are ALL one nation – and planet – under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for ALL
